Our street-feeding programme

Our street-feeding programme

Our street-feeding programme is the very heart of Streetlife.

Streetlife began back in 2003 when, on her way to a weekly prayer meeting, our founder Lillian Mwila met two hungry children on the streets and gave them some bread and juice. Within weeks 85 children were waiting for her every Tuesday and Streetlife was born.

Today, we have two feeding programmes running each week, feeding hundreds of children in Luangwa every Wednesday and Kapoto every Friday.

Get involved.

Find out how you can help children today.

Both Luangwa and Kapoto are “compounds” – small villages – just outside Kitwe, where money and food is thin on the ground and many children can’t afford to go to school.

During every visit, hundreds of children wait patiently with bowls and cups as Streetlife volunteers prepare a portion of porridge, half a boiled egg (and sometimes, when funds allow, half a bread roll) and a cup of tea. Many take their portion of food to share with their family.

Donations from big-hearted supporters from the UK, Ireland and elsewhere – particularly Touch Ireland – have helped us transform our programme way beyond its humble beginnings, but we need more help.

Regular donations are our lifeblood. We’d love to be able to give the children of Kapoto and Luangwa more than we can afford to at present – even if that just meant a whole boiled egg and a whole bread roll every week. We’d love to be able to visit them twice a week rather than just once.

Your donations help pay for two crucial elements in our feeding programme – food and fuel. Streetlife volunteers are just that – they don’t receive a wage for the hours of work they put in each week.

“The joy in these children’s faces is too much for words despite living on so little in their respective homes”

 – one of our volunteers on the street-feeding programme

Thanks to one very generous supporter, we were able to build the Faith Centre feeding hall in Luangwa, which gave the children a shelter to eat under – essential during Zambia’s lengthy rainy season.

Whether you would like to support us financially, spread the word about Streetlife in your area, or come to Kitwe and visit Luangwa and Kapoto for yourself, we would love to hear from you.

If you can’t give us your time or your finances, though, give us  – and, most importantly, the children of Luangwa and Kapoto – your prayers.

“With God, all things are possible.” – Matthew 19:26
