Streetlife stories

Veronika Lundberg

England-based Swede Veronika Lundberg spent more than a year in Kitwe with Streetlife, serving on Streetlife’s street-feeding programme, before returning to the UK at the end of 2019.

Words can’t do justice to how I feel when thinking about my time of serving in Streetlife.

The community-orientated way of living on all levels in society is such a contrast to the Western way of life and speaks of the love of God.

With its feeding programmes, educational sponsorship and 24/7 housing, Streetlife’s impact in the lives of vulnerable children stands as a testimony of God’s provision.

Every Wednesday and Friday we were out in the compounds, aiming to provide more than 1600 meals each month to vulnerable and malnourished children. On the other days I was part of the children’s reading club at Dayspring Academy.

The spirit of generosity, love and care we show by stepping across the road week after week to serve our neighbours and share our bread (or porridge!) with the hungry speaks of the Father heart of God.

What struck me was how hungry the children were for affection and recognition from an adult. Their circumstances had forced them to grow up very quickly, with some of them having witnessed the death of parents and siblings as well as being faced with challenging prospects with regards to education and career prospects.

In response, Streetlife literally steps across the road and serves the community by sowing into the future of Zambia and the lives of the children by providing a safe place, education and a second family.

God truly is a God of second chances and new beginnings – and we are all called to be a part of it!

We are to love the Lord our God with all our heart, all our mind and all our strength, to live a life where we have been broken by the love and grace of God and in response give everything we have to put that love on display.

I left Zambia in November with many tears but a full heart. My time in Kitwe showed me what it means to live sacrificially, and my heart has been enlarged from the generosity and the joy Streetlife brings into the lives of so many children.

I will always carry with me the fond memories of playing with the children in the compound areas during the feeding programmes.

Not everyone speaks English but some things transcend language.
